How to Take Lion's Mane Tincture: A Simple Daily Guide
So you just brought home your first bottle of Lion's Mane tincture. Now what? Under the tongue? In your coffee? How much?
Honestly, we get these questions every single weekend at the booth, so I figured it was time to write it all down. I'm Amanda, and Derek and I grow our mushrooms and make our tinctures by hand on our little family farm in Huffman, TX.
What's a Dual Extract, Anyway?
A tincture is just a liquid extract. We call ours a dual extract because we extract the mushroom two ways. First it soaks in grain alcohol, then we do a hot water decoction, slowly simmering the mushroom in water. Then we blend the two together into one bottle.
Why bother doing it twice? Some parts of a mushroom come out easier in alcohol, and some come out easier in hot water. Doing both is the traditional way to get more from the whole mushroom. It takes longer, and our kitchen smells like mushrooms for days, but we think it's worth it.
Every bottle starts with mushrooms we grew ourselves. We know what's in it because we made it.
How Much to Take
Our label suggests 1 to 2 droppers a day. A 2oz bottle has about 30 servings, so for most folks one bottle lasts about a month.
Give it a good shake first. Natural extracts settle, and a quick shake mixes it all back up. Just a heads up: our tinctures are made with grain alcohol, so each dropper has a small amount in it.
How People Actually Take It
There's no wrong way here. These are the ones we hear about most at the market:
Under the tongue. This is how I take mine. Fill the dropper, squeeze it right under my tongue, hold it a few seconds, then chase it with a sip of water. Straight to the head, as I like to say.
In coffee or tea. Some folks would rather stir it into their morning cup.
In water or juice. If the straight taste isn't your thing, a little glass of water or juice helps a lot.
In a smoothie. Toss it in with everything else.
Pick whatever fits your day. The best way is the one you'll actually keep doing.
Morning or Evening?
A lot of people like Lion's Mane in the morning with coffee or breakfast. Others take it later in the day. There's no rule, so go with whatever time you'll remember.
Lion's Mane supports focus and memory.*
Making It a Habit
The hardest part of any daily thing is remembering it. A few tricks that work for us and for a lot of the folks we talk to:
Keep the bottle right next to the coffee maker or your toothbrush.
Tie it to something you already do every day.
Set a phone reminder for the first couple of weeks.
Sign up for Subscribe and Save so a new bottle shows up before you run out.
How to Store It
Keep it somewhere cool and dark, like a kitchen cabinet or the pantry. Please don't leave it in a hot car. We live outside Houston, and we know what a car in July feels like. Keep the cap on tight between uses. The amber glass helps keep the light out.
Questions We Get All the Time
What does it taste like?
Earthy, a little bitter, with some warmth from the alcohol. Most people get used to it fast, and mixing it into a drink softens it a lot.
Does it have alcohol in it?
Yes. Our tinctures are made with grain alcohol. It's part of the extraction and it also helps preserve the tincture. One dropper is a small amount, but if you avoid alcohol completely, keep that in mind.
How long does it last?
Alcohol based tinctures keep a long time if you store them cool and dark with the cap on tight. Check your bottle's label for details.
Can I take it with my other supplements or medication?
That one's for your doctor. Please talk to your doctor if you're pregnant, nursing, or taking medication.
Can I take Lion's Mane and Reishi together?
Lots of our customers do. That's actually why we started the Power Combo, one bottle of each.
